Snowmobile rules

Snowmobiles may only be driven on well-covered snow where neither the ground nor the vegetation can be damaged. In some areas, snowmobile traffic is regulated by a snowmobile ban. This applies especially in the mountains. There, you may only drive along marked snowmobile trails.

Snowmobile driving is not covered by the right of public access and you therefore have no obvious right to drive on other people's land. As a snowmobile driver, you should primarily drive on marked snowmobile trails. The County Administrative Board or the municipality is usually responsible for public snowmobile trails. Some snowmobile trails are managed by snowmobile clubs or other actors.

You should also remember to drive carefully on snowmobile trails. If the snow cover is so thin or loose that the snowmobile comes into contact with the ground, it is considered bare ground driving, which is not permitted.

Please note that:

You must be 16 years old and have a driver's license to drive a snowmobile, unless you obtained a driver's license or tractor license before 1 January 2000.
As a foreign driver (within the EEA*), you are entitled to drive a snowmobile in Sweden if you have that right in your home country. If you cannot show this or if you come from a country outside the EEA, your only option is to be part of a group in the tourism industry or to hold a Swedish driver's license. *EEA countries are member states of the European Union as well as Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein.
Use an approved helmet based on the regulations in place. Children under the age of seven can use another suitable helmet.
The maximum permitted speed for snowmobiles is 70 km/h. In some places there are local lower speed limits.

Find out about the conditions in the terrain you are going to ride in. And remember - always drive sober!
